California’s tax agency cracks down on $168 million in illicit cannabis, tobacco

SACRAMENTO – California continues to strengthen every part of its strategy to combat the illicit drug marketplace. Governor Gavin Newsom today announced that the state’s tax and fee department has seized more than $168 million in illicit cannabis and tobacco products since 2019, including nearly $22 million during the first half of 2026. 

The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) plays a critical role in ensuring businesses follow the law and contribute fairly to the programs Californians rely on. Read more »
